I read in the paper last week Senator Courtney’s column about the new sex offender legislation passed in Des Moines. That was a very good explanation of the bill that was passed and I thank the Senator and Representative Sands for voting for the bill. It will make the state a safer place. We are now waiting for the Governor to sign it. I had the pleasure (?) of speaking at a public hearing in regards to that bill in the House Chamber in front of around 100 Senators and Representatives and that was quite an experience. I didn’t hardly smart off at all and was able to make my feelings known to those in attendance. The Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association has been pushing for changes like the ones in this bill for several years and we are all very happy to have something on the books that is more workable. Jail Update: The electricians are working hard getting all the wires pulled through the building. Painters are painting, plumbers are plumbing, glass guys are putting in windows, cement on the outside of the building is getting done as the weather allows. There is a little more grading to finish and the Master Gardener Club is getting ready to beautify part of the grounds. We have started cleaning and painting in the existing building as the rooms are vacated by the construction crews and their construction material. We are still expecting to get the keys in the first part of July. It has been a lot of work to keep up with the happenings out there and making decisions on a daily basis to keep the ball rolling. We are still under budget, too.
County Clips - Code Red
A couple weeks ago I went over the Code Red system in detail. I was unable at that time to give you the
process and web site for adding your cell phone(s), but here it is now.
Go to www.louisacountyiowa.org and click on Emergency Management near the top of the page, when you get
on the emergency management page you will see “Code Red” in large print at about the middle of the page.
That will take you to the Code Red site. When you are on the Code Red site find where it says “click here
to get started:” and follow the directions.
Once the form is filled out and submitted, the information goes to Emergency Management to be verified
and the information is entered in the system.
We had a nice write up in the Des Moines Register last week. John Carlson, an Oakville native and
Register columnist, took an interest in the Code Red system after reading about it in our local papers and
informed the rest of the state that Louisa County is on the cutting edge again.
Take advantage of this system and get your contact numbers listed, and while you’re at it, take a look
at the Louisa County site and see what the county offices have to offer.
