Caudle to receive Sullivan Award
Louisa County Chief Deputy Adam Caudle will receive the Sullivan Brothers Award of Valor
at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the rotunda of the State Capital.
The Sullivan Brothers Award of Valor recognizes peace officers and firefighters who
distinguished themselves by the performance of an heroic act in excess of normal demands
while serving in an official capacity, while fully aware of the threat to his/her personal safety.
Caudle is credited with saving the life of a 48-year-old Wapello woman who jumped off the
County's Highway 99 bridge into the Iowa River at Wapello in March.
The sheriff's office responded to a report that the woman, whose name was not released, was
outside the rail on the bridge. The woman jumped from the bridge when a Deputy reached to help her.
Caudle, who was standing by downstream, entered the approximately 40-degree water. He swam about
20 feet into the river, which was above the 20-foot flood stage, before realizing he could not reach
the woman. He re-entered the water further downstream and retrieved her. She was transported by
Wapello Ambulance to Great River Medical Center in Burlington for observation.
Caudle suffered some health issues after the incident.
