Louisa County Sheriff - News

Scam

In the past few weeks it seems we have had more than our fair share of scams attempted (and completed) in Louisa County. We have had scams where the caller tells the victim he has won a large sum of money and all he has to do to claim it is go to the Western Union and cable money to take care of taxes or handling charges. When the money is sent, obviously you are out the money and there is no large prize to be had. We have had forged checks sent to the victim with instructions to put the check in their account and send the person a certain amount of cash immediately, again to cover taxes or other expenses. By the time the bank discovers the check is a forgery, the bad guy already their cash, and the victim or the bank is left with a check drawn on a closed account or a non-existent bank. Last week we had an elderly lady get taken for a large amount of money for a blacktop job for her driveway. In the past we have had tree trimmers, painters, handy men and a lot of other types come through and victimize our population, especially our seasoned citizens. I guess we all need a reminder once in a while. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. If the offer is unsolicited, be extremely wary. It is most likely a scam. Deal with people you know and trust. We have people in Louisa County that will come and trim your trees for you and will appreciate the work. Don’t deal with strangers that you do not know. Call the Sheriff’s Office if you are contacted by someone like this. If you see a neighbor in a situation that appears to be questionable, call the Sheriff’s Office. It is a lot easier to catch these people in the act than it is to track them down and bring them back to justice.
