Disposal Option for Household Hazardous Materials (HHM)
Why is it important to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste Properly?
Household Hazardous Waste can cause ground water contamination if disposed of
improperly. Materials such as paints and cleaners should never be thrown away in
the garbage, it is possible a fire could start or hazardous materials end up in the landfill,
causing potential ground water problems.
Residents from Louisa County can bring the following items for proper disposal to the
Muscatine Recycling Center and Transfer Station, 1000 S Houser Street, Muscatine, IA 52761
Paint Products: latex and oil base paint, cleaners, home improvement items, pesticides, herbicides, pool
chemicals.
Automotive Products: waste motor oil, antifreeze, lead acid batteries
Other Products: varnishes, florescent light bulbs, medical sharps, heavy plastic containers
(example: a heavey plastic laundry detergent bottle)

What are HHMs?
Household Hazardous Materials (HHM) are products considered hazardous. Household materials are
categorized as hazardous if they are corrosive, toxic, flammable and/or reactive. If not managed properly,
they can seriouxly harm the environment and human health.
HHMs can be found almost anywhere in your home. including the kitchen, bathroom, garage and workshop.
The following are some common examples: Adhesive, art supply chemicals, rechargeable button or lead batteries,
bug spray, cleanser, copier toner, disinfectant, engine degreaser, fertilizer, floor care products, fluorescent bulbs,
furniture polish, glue, kerosene, laser printer toner, lighter fluid, metal polish, mildew remover, moth balls oil, oven
cleaner, oil-based paint, pesticide, pool chemicals, resin, solvents, stain products, stain remover, stripper, thinner,
toilet bowl cleaner, varnish, weed killer, wood preservative.
HHM disposal is by Appointment Only: All businesses and Morning Sun Residents call 1-877-429-2436.
All other Louisa County households call 1-319-523-5271, ask for Joellen.
HHM Disposal Checklist:
1. Make a list of the type and amount of each HHM.
2. Call 877-429-2436 (Morning Sun residents & businesses)
or 319-523-5271 (all other Louisa County households)
to schedule an appointment.
3. Keep materials in their packaging, do not mix materials.
4. Label containers that are unmarked.
5. Pack glass containers to prevent breakage.
6. Transport in trunk or back of truck.
7. Do not bring used oil, automotive fluids or latex paints.
